The Smart Car comes to Canada – 85mpg on the highway, 6-speed automatic, traction control, rear-engine, rear-drive. WOW. I *love* this thing

I saw one of these Smart cars down at the Concord Festival on the weekend and had the chance to sit in it. It was incredibly roomy up front for the two passengers. I totally fell in love with this car. There is not much room in the back. Less in fact than I had behind the back seat in my old Jeep TJ. But the car is just so damned cute. I wonder if you can mount bike racks on it at the back???

It has an inline 3 cylinder rear-engine turbo diesel that gets 85mpg (hwy) / 65mpg (city),  uses a clutchless automatic 6-speed, and comes in several different models ranging from $16,500 to $22,000 in Canada. They are being sold through the Mercedes network across Canada.

I hope they sell millions of these things to Vancouverites. Wouldn’t it be great if we were all driving these tiny little things around town?

Then, wouldn’t it be even better if we were filling them with bio-diesel for zero-toxicity, clear, clean emissions?

  1. This is fantastic – the first canuck to buy one with the optional ski carriers and drive it to Whistler gets a pint! or perhaps a half-pint 😉

  2. They should probably get a plaque with a pair of brass balls on it too because driving a 40 hp car up that windy twisty, snowy, slushy route would certainly require a big set of cojones!

Stewart, do they have these things in the UK? What do you think of them?

  3. They sure do have them here. There used to be a ‘show room’ which consisted of about 6 smart cars stacked on top of each other in a glass dispenser!

They are very popular in London and outside. The limited power is not too important as the cars weight very little. Personally I love them, especially the i-Move

which is a smart car fitted out perfectly with an iPod!

It is true that in an accident you don’t have much protection but given most are rarely driven above 30 mph in urban areas the protection is good enough. The favourite version of the car at the moment is the Smart Roadster, I know someone who has one and it is fantastic!

  4. I bought my 2004 smart car 3 months ago w/less than 9,00 miles on it.. It is a blast to drive & have got as much as 66 mpg using the manual option for the transmission… H.
