Agree with the comments on easy interoperation being a W2.0 requirement. I use Writely every day as the collaboration part of the problem is the biggest value for me.

Best text editor ever written is TextEdit by Jens Alfke at Apple for the Mac (as part of the AppleScript project). This is still my favorite and I know for a fact it is both elegantly written and very bug free.

I accept your challenge. I believe I can build it, if you can find the money. The challenge, of course, is getting anybody to pay for a "great" editor, when you can get a mediocre one for free. /Michael

Anybody who writes a damned good text editor should be able to sell that to the world right now and give great terms to encourage rapid spread. How about it Michael Ferguson and Blast Radius?? :-)

Where is the problem? Between apps? I have no idea! And as the end user, I don't care. I just wanted to collaborate on a document and then publish it. I don't know how my car works (make that "worked" - it's gone now), I just use it to get places.

Writely is one of the best of the worst editors out there. Jot's editor is pretty bad but they're apparently replacing it with a kick-ass one this month if they get it done. They licensed it because the one they have is too buggy.

Staying in one tool wasn't an option for this exercise. I needed to:

- write it (okay, one tool is fine)

- share it for simultaneous editing (okay, could have stayed in Writely)

- blog it (oops, the blog connector in Writely didn't work, so I pasted it into Blogware, except oops, the fonts and formatting were broken, so I moved it to Word and then back to Blogware, where oops, the fonts and formatting were still wrong, etc.)

I think the days of "one app" are over and I'm living more and more "in between" and "out there". My data and files live outside of my firewall, I use 6 little web apps, and I need them to interoperate smoothly. I need "glue" for my web apps and great copy/paste between web apps, just like I have on my desktop.

Not sure if that answered any of those questions or just raised more.

So....should we license Writely? Long term, is this a saleable product? What is "the plan" if it were just given away?

Is it Word that's actually the problem in this, or rather, Word's conversion to HTML?

If you stay within one tool, does it Just Work?
